Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad on Thursday reiterated his
country's support to the one-China principle which has gained vast
acceptance and backing in the world.
Mekdad made the remarks while meeting with Chinese Ambassador in Damascus
Li Huaxin, renewing Syria's rejection of the attempts by the Taiwan
authorities aimed at targeting this principle including getting Taiwan
into the United Nations.
Mekdad underlined Syria's commitment to UN resolution 2758 in 1971 that
insists on the one-China policy and recognizes the People's Republic of
China as lawful representative of China in the UN.
The two sides also discussed coordination and consultation between the
two countries in the UN, as well as enhancing bilateral relations in all
domains.
Resolution 2758 was adopted at the 26th session of the UN General
Assembly on Oct. 25, 1971, which decided to transfer China's seat in the
United Nations to the government of the People's Republic of China.
