Chinanews, May 30 - "Sandstorms cannot be permanently eliminated in
China", said Liu Tuo, Director of the National Bureau to Combat
Desertification under the State Forestry Administration on May 29,
according to Beijing's media.
Liu said that China witnessed more sandstorms this year than it did in
previous years, and the fundamental reasons lie in climate and sand
sources. The area of sand sources kept decreasing year by year, but at a
limited rate. Therefore, sandstorms cannot be permanently eliminated in
China.
Liu indicated at the same time that forestry departments have taken
forceful measures to change the weak ecological situation in the northern
areas, with strong protective measures on one hand and increasing
investment in eco-construction on the other hand. At present, the
ecological condition has been further improved and the area of
desertified land in sand source regions is on the decrease.
Liu also stated that China has carried out multi-field, multi-layer,
multi-perspective and multi-aspect international cooperation in its
desertification prevention and control actions. For instance, in the
lately completed cooperation project between Italy and Inner Mongolia's
Chifeng City, Italy invested US$1.53 million for desertification
prevention and control at Aohan Banner in Inner Mongolia. Many countries
have made investment in over 100 big or small projects in the sand source
area of Beijing and Tianjin.
