Beijing's prospects for 2008

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 18 (Wu Qingcai) - At today's International Forum
on the Construction and Operation of Olympic Stadiums, Chai Xiaozhong,
deputy chief of the Beijing Municipal Commission for Development and
Reform (BMCDR), summarized prospects regarding local economic and social
development in the lead up to 2008.
In 2008, Beijing's total output value is expected to reach about 630
billion yuan; per capita GDP is expected to exceed 5,000 USD, and the
average disposable income of urban residents will likely reach 22,000
yuan.
Beijing's highways are expected to increase from the present 500 km to
718 km; road traffic mileage will reach 14,700 km, and road density will
reach 87.3 km every 100 square km.
Beijing's urban greenery coverage is expected to increase from 41.5% to
45%; per capita public greenbelt area will exceed 13 square meters, and
the percentage of days with air quality meeting the Grade II national
standard will increase from 62.5% to 70%. Beijing is also expected to
effectively eliminate and control the pollution of more than 500 km of
watercourses.
Moreover, Beijing will have completed construction of the Digital Beijing
framework, as well as a number of key cultural facilities, including the
National Grand Theatre of China, the Phase II project of the National
Library of China, the Phase II project of the National Art Museum of
China, the Phase III project of the China Science and Technology Museum,
the Capital Museum, the new CCTV building and the new Beijing TV
building. Beijing will have a higher level of information technology
development, and cultural activities will become more prosperous.
